Living the Proverbs 31 Life – Introduction

| Categorized under Living the Proverbs 31 Life | Leave a comment

This series of articles is dedicated to virtuous women, that is, those women living or endeavoring to live the “Proverbs 31 Life.” In this series, we will look at the passage, verse by verse. We will do so in order to gain an understanding of the woman in the text and an understanding of how to apply the text to our daily lives.

Is it possible to live the Proverbs 31 Life?

Absolutely, yes! It is possible to live this kind of life. Admittedly, at first glance and even with many subsequent readings, Proverbs 31:10-31, looks impossible. However, I say again, it is not. What is impossible with man, is possible with God. With God all things are possible. (See Matthew 19:26.).

So, how do we live this lifestyle?

Our first order of business is to recognize that while we pay attention to the text literally, we also pay attention to the spirit of the text. The Bible says, “The letter killeth, but the Spirit giveth life.” (See II Cor. 3:5-6.). I do believe that we should strive to live out each verse; however, Proverbs 4:7 instructs that in all our getting, to get understanding. If we take the text too literally, we find that we are attempting to do things that are not necessarily conducive to the betterment of our lives. For example, the passage refers to the virtuous woman spinning wool. In today’s society (especially in America), there are not many people who will spin their own wool, because woolen items are readily available. Of course, if you have a desire to spin wool, by all means, do so. However, there is no need for anyone to feel condemned if they do not. With scriptures of this sort, it is important that we find out the spirit of the text and incorporate that into our lives, which we will do. For the record, this “spinning of wool” is an indication of the Proverbs 31 Woman’s industriousness and willingness to get things done. All people (men included) can benefit from incorporating these qualities into their lives whether they spin wool or not.

Also, while attempting to live out this passage, it is important to recognize that the text should span your lifetime. You should not try to have everything at once. If you do, you will likely run yourself ragged. Life is lived in stages. Your goal should be to get into the Word of God and allow that Word to get into you. As you grow in the knowledge of the Word, you will find that you will have incorporated more and more of the qualities of the Proverbs 31 Woman into your life.

What is the spirit of the entire passage?

What we will see as we study Proverbs 31:10-31 is that the essence of the entire text is “Walking in the Wisdom of God.” The Proverbs 31 Woman was successful because she walked in God’s Wisdom. The passage says she was praised because she reverently and worshipfully feared the Lord. The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom. (Prov. 9:10). The Proverbs 31 Woman knew that without God, she was nothing, but with God, she could do anything! If we put God first, we will, without a doubt, be the virtuous women that are so needed today. With God all things are possible!

I hope that you are as excited about this series of articles as I am. I truly believe that it will be a blessing to the women in the Body of Christ. Be blessed and I’ll see in the next article!
